WNBA: August Players of the Month

Earlier in August, the WNBA announced Week 2: WNBA Players of the Week. A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces and Courtney Vandersloot of the Chicago Sky were announced as the players of the week. The month of August was a month full of exciting plays, talented players, and thrilling games. With many talented players showing out in the Wubble, the WNBA now announced the August Players of the Month. Both A’ja Wilson and Courtney Vandersloot were announced for the August Players of the Month by the WNBA. Let’s dive deeper into the WNBA: August Players of the Month.

East Coast: Courtney Vandersloot

Courtney Vandersloot of the Chicago Sky is the East Coast Player of the Month. Vandersloot is in the tenth season with the Sky. She is currently averaging 13.6 PPG, 9.5 APG, and 1.3 SPG. Last night against the Fever, Vandersloot had a record-breaking game. She broke the assist record for one game with a total of 18 assists. The record broken was Ticha Penicheiro‘s with 16 assists in one game in both 1998 and 2002. Courtney has stepped up to the plate as a leader more than ever before this season. With the absence of Diamond DeShields and Azurá Stevens, and the Sky struggling with injuries, her role is very important.

Vandersloot has a vision that every team desires. Being able to see her teammates and get them the ball while still being an offensive threat is a huge asset for the Sky. Dishing out around 9 assists per game is a huge way to contribute to her team. She also shoots nearly 38% from the three-point line. The Sky continues to dominate being ranked fifth overall in the league. Their playoff spot is not yet clinched but they are very close to this accomplishment. She should definitely be discussed in the MVP race and will continue to be a huge player for the Sky. Congrats to Courtney on this amazing accomplishment.

West Coast: A’ja Wilson

A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces is the West Coast Player of the Month. In only her third season, Wilson is making veteran moves for her team. She is currently averaging 20.3 PPG, 8.3 RPG, and 2.2 BPG. She had a season-high 31-points against the NY Liberty. Not only has her offense been unstoppable this season, but her defense as well. Her ability to rebound and block shots are greatly valued with the absence of Liz Cambage this season. As well as Cambage being absent, Kelsey Plum is absent due to an Achilles injury. Wilson alongside her teammates, especially the bench, has been a dominant team in the league.

Wilson has helped lead the team to a 12-3 record, leading them to be second in the league and have clinched a playoff spot. A’ja has continued to show how much of a dominant player she can be despite recently only turning 24. This team values A’ja’s leadership at a young age. Her jump shot has improved so much this year and helps her stretch the floor. Wilson is another name you may hear in the MVP conversation. She was the only player for the month of August to rank in the top five for points, rebounds, and blocks. Congrats to A’ja on this amazing accomplishment.

About Aislyn Jowers

I've grown up going to NCCAW games, when Tiffany Mitchell was drafted to the Indiana Fever in 2016 it opened the doors to the WNBA for me. Ever since then, I have been an avid watcher of both the WNBA and NCAAW games. Instead of bothering my family and friends with my thoughts about the game, I decided I will write about it instead.
