Week 2: Players of The Week for the WNBA

Week 2: Players of the Week

This week’s( last week) has been an exciting week of basketball for WNBA players, coaches, and fans across the countries. So many players have come to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida to ball out and show their true skills despite fatigue and a quick schedule. Today via their social media, the WNBA announced this week’s Players of the Week for both the east and the west coast. For the east coast, Courtney Vandersloot of the Chicago Sky. For the west coast, A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces. Let’s dive deeper into WNBA Week 2: Players of the Week.

East Coast: Courtney Vandersloot

Courtney Vandersloot of the Chicago Sky is a huge threat to opponents. According to the WNBA website, Vandersloot is averaging 14.7 PPG, 8.9 APG, and shooting a little over 51% from the field. Vandersloot also has the ability to stretch the floor and is a sharpshooter from both the field and the three-point line. She has the ability to lead this team on the court as she is an experienced player since this is her tenth season with the Sky.

Not only does Vandersloot have the ability to create her own shots and be aggressive going to the basket. She also has the ability to pass the ball to her teammates and see the floor. As a guard, she is selfless and helps out her teammates by dishing out the ball to them across the floor. Vandersloot has helped the Sky with her leadership and dedication to her teammates to a 5-2 record. This record puts the Sky at third place in the WNBA standings. Courtney Vandersloot is the guard that the Sky cherishes in both in scoring and assists, but also as a leader. Congrats to Courtney for WNBA Week 2 players of the week and it is very well deserved.

West Coast: A’ja Wilson

A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces is a young, but talented player who doesn’t shy away from a challenge. In only seven games thus far, A’ja averages 22.3 PPG according to the WNBA Website. Not only is Wilson an offensive threat, but she is also a defensive threat and has the ability to grab defensive boards. She is currently averaging 8.9 RPG and 0.9 BPG. She stands tall at 6’5″, but her shot outside of the paint is improving. In only her third season, Wilson has stepped up to the plate as a leader that the Aces seek.

A’ja has been a great team player for this Las Vegas team. She has consistently been scoring, but also looks out for her teammates. Despite Wilson’s young age, she is beginning to play like a veteran and act as a leader both on and off the court. Last night in a close game against Liberty, A’ja took the game into her own hands. She ended out with 31 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 blocks in a nail-biting game and pulled out the win. Wilson has helped lead the Aces to a 5-2 record, which puts them in fourth in the WNBA standings. A’ja is a valued player for the Aces and will continue to do so. Congrats to A’ja for WNBA Week 2 players of the week and it is very well deserved.

About Aislyn Jowers

I've grown up going to NCCAW games, when Tiffany Mitchell was drafted to the Indiana Fever in 2016 it opened the doors to the WNBA for me. Ever since then, I have been an avid watcher of both the WNBA and NCAAW games. Instead of bothering my family and friends with my thoughts about the game, I decided I will write about it instead.
