Without question, the UConn Huskies have looked like the best team in women’s college basketball so far this season. At the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, the Huskies faced the No. 11 Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday afternoon. UConn took a early 10-point lead over Iowa following the first quarter with a score of 22-12. Iowa put up 19 points in the second quarter, but found themselves down 42-31 at the half.
Ultimately, the Huskies outscored the Hawkeyes in the second half 48 -33 to hand Iowa their second loss on the season. The major difference was Iowa committing 26 turnovers to UConn’s nine. What’s more, 41 of the Huskies points came off turnovers.
For the Hawkeyes, forward Hannah Stuelke led the team in scoring with 17 points and shot 72.7 percent from the field. Guard Chazadi Wright added 16 points, going four of eight from beyond the arc.
Looking at the Huskies, the duo of Sarah Strong and Azzi Fudd made their presence known once again. Strong scored 23 points, six steals, and four assists. Fudd put up 27 points, 21 of which came in the first half. She drained five three-pointers in the victory. Additionally, freshman Blanca Quinonez scored 10 points in 21 minutes of action.
