New York Liberty Surprise Chicago Sky With a 101-99 Victory

The New York Liberty came up with an upset win over the Chicago Sky. It was a close game, but New York edged out a 101-99 on two Layshia Clarendon free throws with 0.3 seconds left in the game.

Coming into the game, New York had lost seven games in a row; their last win was on August 7 against the Washington Mystics. The Liberty overcame Allie Quigley‘s big game, she scored 29 points on 9-22 from the field, including four three-pointers. New York used a balanced offensive attack to get the victory over Chicago.

Balanced Attack

The Liberty had five players in double figures, led by Amanda Zahui B. with 22 points. Zahui B. was on fire in the game shooting 9-14 from the field and 4-7 from beyond the arc. She also added 12 rebounds, three blocks, and three steals. Zahui B. was everywhere on the court; she played hard and was determined to help lead the Liberty to a victory. Kiah Stokes added 14 points, and Clarendon had 17 points on 6 of 9 shooting.

Bench Scoring

New York’s bench contributed to the game with 41 points. The bench was led by rookie Jocelyn Willoughby, who had 14 points. Two other rookies, Jazmine Jones, added 9, and Kylee Shook scored 8 points off the bench. The Liberty bench bought a ton of energy, and they played with confidence. Paris Kea also contributed to the bench with 10 points.

Shooting

New York shot 55% from the field and 46.7% from the three-point line. The Liberty made 14 total three-point shots with Zahui B. leading the way with four. New York did everything well on offense in the game; they attacked the basket and was able to hit outside shots. The Liberty have struggled all season long on offense. Coming into the game, New York was averaging 72.8 points per game.

It was the best New York has looked all season, they played with heart and determination. It was an excellent way to start the second half of the season. Let’s see if the Liberty can carry this game over for the rest of the season.
