An Outstanding Conclusion in AU Softball Classic

Without question, AU Softball has supplied fans with some instant classics with clutch hits over the years. However, fans at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex saw a bunt win a game over the weekend. Games Five and Six were all about sound offense and excellent pitching. Here are the recaps of both games.

Game Five: Team McCleney wins 4 –3 in walk-off fashion over Team Rhodes

In this game, Haylie McCleney and her team needed the bottom of the seventh inning to make their comeback complete. The game saw Team McCleney three runs to two over Shannon Rhodes’ squad entering the final frame. Yet, Rachel Garcia tied it up following a homer to left field for Team Rhodes.

It was McCleney’s team that had the chance to win the game. Victoria Hayward got on base with a single as Mia Davidson advanced Hayward to third base on another single. Now, Sierra Romero entered the batter’s box to become the hero. Romero squared up and connected on a bunt to score Hayward.

Previously, Delanie Wisz knocked in two runs in the second as McCleney hit an RBI single in the fourth. In contrast, the offense ahead of Garcia’s seventh-inning home run came RBI singles by Jordan Roberts and Taylor Edwards for Team Rhodes.

Megan Faraimo got the win as she went six innings, striking out five batters for Team McCleney.

Game Six: Team Denham used pitching to get a 4 – 0 win over Team Mulipola

While the previous game ended with a walk-off, Alyssa Denham and her team walked away with a shutout. The veteran right-hander tossed four innings, allowing just one hit.

Furthermore, Odicci Alexander got the save for Team Denham as pitched the final three innings. Alexander allowed one hit and struck out five. What’s more, the lone two hits for Dejah Mulipola’s team came from Mulipola and Tori Vidales.

The offense for Denham came from Kelsey Stewart-Hunter and Anissa Urtez as each had two RBIs apiece. It’s important to note that Team Denham swept all 120 possible win points versus Team Mulipola.

Ironically, the last time this happened involved both teams last August as Denham’s squad took all 120 possible win points.
