The Rookie of The Year Race

The Rookie of The Year Race

With time running out in the regular season there is a lot of discussion going on about awards. Now one award, in particular, will be a close one, The Rookie of The Year Race. From injuries to changes in starting lineups, a lot has changed for players, especially rookies during this unusual season. Let’s take a look into these rookies and who could potentially win ROTY.

5. Te’a Cooper

Te’a Cooper is one of those rookies that needs to be talked about. Cooper was acquired by the LA Sparks after being waived by the Phoenix Mercury. Despite being a second-round pick, she is making an impact on her team and on the game. She recently just had her first game in the starting lineup. She is currently averaging 7.2 PPG and 2.0 AST. Even though her numbers aren’t super high, her impact while on the court is quite noticeable.

4. Satou Sabally

Satou Sabally, also known as a unicorn, is by far one of the top rookies, especially as a post player. Sabally was drafted second overall by the Dallas Wings. She is a huge asset for this already young Dallas team. She is currently averaging 13.9 PPG, 7.8 RPG, and 2.5 AST. Sabally is a huge offensive threat and can stretch the floor with her jump shot. Not only is she dominant in scoring but she is also there for her teammates in both rebounding and assists as well.

3. Julie Allemand

Julie Allemand has been a rookie that has not gotten much recognition this season. She was not drafted this year and had never played in the WNBA until this season when the Fever signed her as a free agent. Allemand is currently averaging 8.7 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 5.7 AST, and 1.2 STL. She is currently second in the league for steals. While only being a rookie of the league, Allemand has really stepped up for her team as a leader on both sides of the basketball.

2. Chennedy Carter

Chennedy Carter, also known as Hollywood, is the perfect piece for the Atlanta Dream. Despite having an ankle injury then later coming back, she came back in full force for her team. She is currently averaging 16.5 PPG and 3.6 AST. She was picked up by the Dream in this year’s draft, fourth overall. Chennedy is a pure shooter and is shooting about 38% from the line. Despite leaving Texas A&M after her junior year, she is playing with a lot of skill as a young rookie.

1. Crystal Dangerfield

Crystal Dangerfield has been a hidden gem until the start of the season for the Minnesota Lynx. The Lynx got a good pick when they drafted Dangerfield in the second round. After being a force off the bench, Dangerfield got put in the starting lineup and has been in since. She is currently averaging 15.9 PPG, 3.6 AST, and 1.9 RPG. She is only 5’5″, but stands tall amongst opponents. The Lynx have valued her leadership while only being a rookie. She has helped them in the regular season and will continue to contribute in the postseason play. This is my pick for Rookie of the Year Race because she is Dangerous Dangerfield.

About Aislyn Jowers

I've grown up going to NCCAW games, when Tiffany Mitchell was drafted to the Indiana Fever in 2016 it opened the doors to the WNBA for me. Ever since then, I have been an avid watcher of both the WNBA and NCAAW games. Instead of bothering my family and friends with my thoughts about the game, I decided I will write about it instead.
