When it comes to Seattle, they played valiantly in their WNBA season opener at home despite losing by 11 points to Golden State. The Storm looked for win No. 1 on the young season on the road versus the Sun, who were also in search of their first victory.
In the opening quarter, Seattle took a 29 – 24 lead over Connecticut. Rookie guard Flau’jae Johnson led the Storm with seven points. A major factor in Seattle getting the early lead was making three of their four shots from three-point range.
However, the Sun outscored the Storm by a 25 – 15 margin in quarter number two. Following the end of the first half, Seattle found themselves down 49 – 44 on the scoreboard against Connecticut.
Looking at the third quarter, it was all about veteran guard Lexie Brown , accounting for 12 of the Storm’s 19 points in the quarter. Here, all 12 of her points came from beyond the arc as Brown made four of her five attempts from three-point land. The fourth quarter was tight as Seattle put up 26 points to Connecticut’s 21.
What’s more, the Storm shot 53.8 percent from the field in the final quarter as they get their first win with a score of 89-82. Additionally, Sonia Raman gets the first win of her coaching career.
Seattle – Connecticut Recap and What’s Next
Firstly, Brown led the Storm in scoring with 17 points, going 83.3 percent (five-of-six) from three-point range. Johnson had 16 points while grabbing six rebounds and three steals as she made nine of her 10 free throws.
It’s important to note Johnson put herself in some elite company with her performance on Sunday. In the Storm’s franchise history, only five rookies scored 10+ points in their first two games. The former LSU star joined Breanna Stewart, Sue Bird, Lauren Jackson, and Semeka Randall. Next, guards Jade Melbourne and Natisha Hiedeman put up 15 points and 11 points, respectively, in the victory.
