Rennia Davis: The Newest Member of the Lynx

“With the 9th pick in the 2021 WNBA Draft, the Minnesota Lynx select Rennia Davis of the University of Tennessee.” These words spoken by Cathy Engelbert on April 15, 2021, will not soon be forgotten in the Davis household. Now Davis is the newest member of the Lynx.

Cheryl Reeve said Davis was second on the Lynx draft board in her post-draft press conference. Davis was also projected to be drafted in the top five in many mock drafts.

On The Cheryl Reeve Show, Reeve mentions the draft strategy with the Lynx’s sole pick was to take the best player available at the number nine spot. When the team’s second-ranked player fell to nine, they had to pull the trigger.

Davis officially became the newest member of the Lynx on April 19, 2021, after signing her rookie scale contract. She will join the team in a supporting role and will play both small and power forward. According to Reeve, Davis can already contribute by rebounding and playing defense at the WNBA level. Her current weakness is shooting from beyond the arc.

This is something that will be worked on in training camp. With assistant coaches Katie Smith and Plenette Pierson, it should not be difficult for her to improve her three-point percentage. Rebekkah Brunson will make Davis even stronger on the glass. Although many have referred to her as WNBA ready, these assistant coaches can bring her to a whole new level.

According to WNBA.com Davis averaged 17.3 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game in her final season at the University of Tennessee. These stats combined with an 85.3% field goal percentage proves that Davis will be able to contribute offensively off the bench for the Lynx.
