Renee Montgomery Joining Hawks Broadcast Team

The Atlanta Hawks announced Tuesday that there would be some changes to their broadcast team on Fox Sports Southeast. Atlanta Dream guard Renee Montgomery will join “Hawks Live”, as a pre and postgame analyst in the studio.

Renee Montgomery

Montgomery has been an analyst before for the Hawks G League affiliate, the College Park Skyhawks. She did some play-by-play for the Skyhawks as well. Joining Montgomery in the studio will be Jermone Jurenbovich. Kelly Crull will be the new courtside reporter, and reporter Mike Glenn will work certain games.

“It’s everything to me, in the sense that I understand the game, I understand the X’s and O’s in-depth, not just from the outside looking in, I understand how team chemistry works, so I can understand why a player might be playing a certain way. … I would say just my basketball experience is going to help me understand just what’s going on with the Hawks on a deeper level,” Montgomery said.

Playing Career

Montgomery has played in the WNBA for 11 seasons; the Minnesota Lynx drafted her in 2009. She has played for Minnesota Lynx, Connecticut Sun, Seattle Strom, and now the Atlanta Dream. Montgomery won two WNBA championships with the Lynx in 2015 and 2017 in her second stint with the team after being traded after her rookie season. In 2011, Montgomery was named to the All-Star team and won Sixth Women of the Year in 2012.

In 11 seasons, the former Lynx star averaged 9.7 points per game and is under contract with the Dream for next season. The two-time All-Star did not play this past season because she wanted to play a more significant role in social justice reform.

“There’s work to be done off the court in so many areas in our community,” Montgomery wrote on Twitter. “Social justice reform isn’t going to happen overnight, but I do feel that now is the time.”

Montgomery will be great at being an analyst for the Hawks; she knows the game of basketball and knows how to break it down. In the future, it will be interesting if she comes back to play; Mongomery does have one more year left on her contract.
