Arike Ogunbowale: First Time WNBA All-Star and MVP

From game-winning shots at Notre Dame to then become a top scorer in the WNBA; this player is a huge face of women’s basketball. If you do not know who I am talking about then the name Arike Ogunbowale may seem unfamiliar but now you should know it. Drafted in 2019 by the Dallas Wings, since day one Arike has been a top scorer in the league and there is no denying her talent. In her third season, Arike finally earned the honor she has been striving for as an All-Star. During the game, Arike made sure fans knew who she was. Ogunbowale became a First Time WNBA All-Star and MVP as well as bringing Team WNBA to victory.

Career with the Dallas Wings

Ogunbowale has had phenomenal success in the league as a player in her short career thus far. During the 2020 season, she became the W’s leading scorer with 22.8 PPG. There is no denying that Arike is a phenomenal scorer and is extremely talented. Her success is undeniable as she has scored double figures in nearly 60 consecutive games. Although the Wings are only 9-12, they are a very young team led by Arike who is currently averaging 18.9 PPG, 3.0 RPG, 3.3 AST, and 1.1 STL.

All-Star MVP

After not being selected for the USA Women’s National Team, Ogunbowale was chosen as an All-Star which is still a huge accomplishment. Ogunbowale and eleven others suited up to play for Team WNBA. Team WNBA was set to play against Team USA, a tough but fun matchup that fans were excited to see. One standout came to play and that happened to be the one and only Arike Ogunbowale. Arike scored 26 points to bring Team WNBA to a 93-85 victory over Team USA. She earned the win and the honor of MVP. Not to mention she also was live-tweeting throughout the game.

This victory is huge since Team USA is expected to make a gold medal run in the Olympics. Arike was unstoppable in the game, shooting nearly 56% from the field and 50% from three. This game and win were huge to prove how big of a player Arike is on a big stage. Do not count her out of any other major titles because Ogunbowale is not going anywhere.

About Aislyn Jowers

I've grown up going to NCCAW games, when Tiffany Mitchell was drafted to the Indiana Fever in 2016 it opened the doors to the WNBA for me. Ever since then, I have been an avid watcher of both the WNBA and NCAAW games. Instead of bothering my family and friends with my thoughts about the game, I decided I will write about it instead.
