Why Chelsea Dungee Makes Most Sense for Chicago?

Chelsea Dungee

With the draft right around the corner; WNBA GMs are seeking to pick players that can lead their franchise into the future. For Chicago’s James Wade, he will look to add a point guard to the already exciting and fast-paced Chicago offense.

Chicago will have the luxury of choosing 8th in the 2021 WNBA draft, and a player that should be on everyone’s mind is Chelsea Dungee.

Standing at 5’11 the star point guard from Arkansas averaged 22.3 ppg while shooting almost 40% from the 3. The 22.3 ppg is the second-best single-season scoring record in Arkansas history. She also finished all of the games in double-figure scoring; posting 18 games with 20 or better points and (four) 30 or higher points.

With Chicago pulling off the biggest signing in Free Agency with Candace Parker, a player with Dungee’s scoring ability on the outside will for sure open up opportunities for Parker on the inside.

Just think about a roster system of Chelsea Dungee, Allie Quigley, Gabby Williams, Azurá Stevens, and Parker. A lineup like that could smell trouble for other teams in the WNBA.

Not only will Dungee be a threat from the 3, but she’s a guard that can get to the rim and free-throw line. In her senior season, Chelsea Dungee shot 42.4% from the floor while shooting an efficient 80% from the line. Her ability to play inside along with her size will allow Wade to use her in numerous ways and various positions.

Drafting a backup guard for Chicago is a must. Outside of their defensive struggles in 2020; Chicago also suffered on the offensive end without Courtney Vandersloot on the floor; posting an abysmal -18.7 net rating without Vandersloot.

Chelsea Dungee could be the guard of the future for Chicago; with Vandersloot and Quigley as her teachers; she could very well be the next superstar guard in this league. If she is available at 8th this a player Chicago cannot pass up, or they might regret it.
