Upsets and Bracket Busters

This year’s tournament has given fans all of the excitement we yearn for during this time of year. There have been several upsets and bracket-busters so far. But are we surprised? Slightly.

Biggest upset?

Was the biggest upset Princeton over Kentucky or Creighton over Iowa?
After Kentucky’s big win in the SEC championship over South Carolina, most expected them to make it out of the round of 64. But the Princeton Tigers brought their A-game. Princeton’s defense held Rhyne Howard to 28%, shooting 4/14 on the night. Abby Meyers led all scores and gave the Tigers 29 points.

Then we have the mighty Creighton. The Bluejays took down Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Creighton was relentless the entire game and played with pure passion. This was Creighton’s second upset during this tournament; they sent Colorado home during the round of 64. Although many were looking forward to an Iowa/SC match-up in the Elite Eight, the Hawkeyes couldn’t secure the win to give us this match-up. Much like the Bluejays, the South Dakota Coyotes took down two higher seeds to get to the sweet 16. The Coyotes beat Coach Yo and her Rebels by 14 in the first round.

Other notable losses

The University of North Carolina Tarheels took down the Arizona Wildcats in a 63 to 45 victory. Gonzaga (9) edged out Nebraska (8), and Belmont (12) sent Oregon (5) home. Florida Gulf Coast University gave us Cinderella vibes in the first round knocking out the number 5 seed, Virginia Tech.

Games to look forward to this weekend

All of them? Let’s see if Creighton and South Dakota can continue their upset streaks. Then, Greensboro will have the battle of the Carolinas, and we will see if UConn has what it takes to make it to the Elite Eight.
