All things considered, the first series of the AUSL proved to be a great success with sellout crowds and stellar action on the field. Fans and those watching across the U.S. witnessed perfection in the final game of the series and more. That being said, here is a recap of Games Five and Six of the AUSL season.
Game Five: The Pitching Was “Blazing” in Wichita
Entering this game, the Volts controlled the series against the Blaze by winning the first two games by a combined 15-4 margin. However, that all changed when Emma Lemley took the circle as she put the electricity out of the Volts bats.
Following a solo home run from Tiare Jennings in the top of the third, Lemley would not allow another run. The former Virginia Tech star went five innings, allowing three hits, the aforementioned homer, and struck out two.
As for the Blaze’s offense, Danielle Gibson Whorton and Taylor Edwards put up RBIs in the bottom of the fourth inning as Anissa Urtez added another in the sixth. The Blaze avoided the sweep with a 3-1 win. Despite the loss, Sam Landry went four-and-a-third inning in her much-anticipated debut with the Volts. She allowed three hits, an earned run with a strikeout.
Game Six: A Flawless Effort in Rosemont
In this case, the Bandits and Talons were in search of win No. 2 on the young season in Rosemont. For the Bandits, the offense started early off the bat of Bubba Nickles-Camarena with a solo shot to center in the bottom of the first.
Next, Delanie Wisz hit an RBI triple as Jordan Roberts hit a two-run homer in the second. Finally, RBIs by Cori McMillan, Wisz, Bella Dayton, and Sydney McKinney capped the offense in the fifth. The 8-0 win is not the only the first shutout in AUSL history, but the first run-rule victory.
Right-hander Odicci Alexander and lefty Emiley Kennedy each went two innings while righty Lexi Kilfoyl finished it off in the fifth. All three allowed a combined three hits and three strikeouts to take two-of-three from the Talons.
