Ahead of their matchup versus the Michigan Wolverines, the No. 1 UConn Huskies looked impressive coming off a 100-68 win over Ohio State in Hartford, Connecticut. However, UConn faced a Wolverines team who was ranked No. 6 in the nation. Michigan only managed to score five points in the first quarter to the Huskies’ 22.
The second half told a different story as the Wolverines put up 22 points in the second quarter. However, the Huskies held a 45-27 lead at halftime in Uncasville, Conn at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Michigan stormed into quarter number three, holding the defending National Champions to four points. Now, Michigan made it a game as they were down four with the score being 49-45.
Entering the final quarter, it had all the feelings of a March Madness game with both teams going back-and-forth. Azzi Fudd drained two free throws with eight seconds left to give UConn the 72-69 win over Michigan.
For the Huskies, the duo of Fudd and Sarah Strong impressed. Fudd led the scoring with 31 points while accounting for seven of UConn’s 10 made three-pointers. Once again, Strong dominated the glass with 20 rebounds and interior with four blocks. She added 16 points in the victory.
Despite the loss, guard Syla Swords led the Wolverines with 29 points and grabbing nine boards. Guard Olivia Olsen notched a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
What Is Next For The UConn Huskies?
Following the win over Michigan, UConn faces the Utah Utes in the Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase at 2:30 ET today on FS1. Additionally, the Huskies will begin Big East on the road Nov. 30 against Xavier and then South Florida on Dec. 2 in Tampa, Florida.
