Breeze Split Vinyl and Mist Matchups in Unrivaled Basketball

Early on, the Breeze have shown the chemistry in Unrivaled Basketball in their first season. Known collectively as the “Youngins”, they faced the Vinyl on Saturday looking to get back in the win column in Miami. Also, the team competed against the Mist on Monday night.

In the first quarter, the Breeze saw themselves down 26-15 as Atlanta Dream center Brittney Griner led the quarter in scoring with eight points for the Vinyl. The second quarter saw the Vinyl take a 50-30 lead over the Breeze. This is thanks to Griner’s Dream and teammate Rhyne Howard as she hit five three-pointers.

Following halftime, the Breeze scored 19 points in quarter number three, but found themselves now down 70-49. Paige Bueckers led the squad in scoring with eight points as Kate Martin added six for the Breeze.

A comeback would be an uphill battle for the Youngins, needing 81 points or more for the victory. Bueckers accounted for 13 of the Breeze’s 17 points in the fourth quarter as Brink scored the other four points. In the end, the Vinyl reached exactly 11 points as Howard won it from the free throw line for the 81-66 win.

For the Vinyl, Howard led the way in scoring with 30 points, hitting six shots from beyond the arc. She had six rebounds and four steals as well. Hamby put up 21 points as the Los Angeles Sparks forward also grabbed six boards.

Griner went six-of-10 from the field, racking up 17 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks. Williams contributed seven assists with six points while Erica Wheeler and Rae Burrell scored six and two points, respectively.

Looking at the Breeze, Bueckers is having a great start to the season. The Dallas Wings guard’s line was 25 points, nine boards, and seven assists. Rickea Jackson and Dominique Malonga each put up 13 points as Malonga also picked up nine rebounds. Martin added eight points as Brink had seven points. Turnovers was the Waterloo for the Breeze with 13 to the Vinyl’s five.

Two days later, the Breeze looked to get back in the win column versus the Mist. After the tipoff between Malonga and Unrivaled co-founder Breanna Stewart, the Breeze got off to a fast start. They took a 27-15 following the conclusion of the first quarter. Without question, Bueckers stole the quarter with 18 of the 27 points, including three three-pointers.

However, the Mist cooled off the Breeze in the second quarter with 25 points to make it a 47-40 game at the half. Stewart accounted for 20 of the Mist’s 25 points in the quarter. Brink led the Breeze in scoring the quarter with nine points.

Once again, Bueckers made her presence felt in this game as she scored 16 points in the third quarter. Entering the final quarter, the Breeze held a 72-57 lead as 83 points or more is needed for the win. In the end, the Mist could not overcome the deficit as the Breeze got the 83 – 64 victory.

Stewart led the way for Mist in the loss with a double-double of 26 points and 11 rebounds. Gray scored 20 points while Bueckers’ Wings teammate Arike Ogunbowale scored 12. Finally, Golden State Valkyries guard Veronica Burton had four points while Alanna Smith of the Minnesota Lynx put up two.

Needless to say that Bueckers was the Breeze’s leading scorer with 37 points with eight boards. Brink scored an Unrivaled career-high 18 points in 13.5 minutes of action as Malonga added a double-double. The Seattle Storm center scored 16 points and grabbed 16 boards. Jackson added 10 points and Martin scored two in the win.

A huge factor for this Breeze squad was having just eight total turnovers, out rebounding the Mist by a 46-35 margin, and going 48.3 percent from the field. Going deeper, Bueckers is leading Unrivaled Basketball in assists (34) and third in points (117). What’s more, Malonga is second in rebounds (57) and blocks (6).

Up next for the Breeze (3-2) are the Lunar Owls on Saturday night as the Mist will face the Rose on Friday evening.
