For fans of Unrivaled, the Breeze (aka the Youngins) have been fun to watch under head coach Noelle Quinn. Sitting in prime position to make the playoffs, they looked to pick up another win last Saturday night against the Lunar Owls.
The first quarter was close as the Breeze was up by a score of 32-25 as Dominique Malonga led the team with 12 points in the quarter. However, two of those points came via a dunk with 3:30 in the quarter. It is important to note that it marked just the second dunk in Unrivaled history.
Connecticut Sun star forward Aaliyah Edwards led the Lunar Owls with 11 points in the quarter. Additionally, Edwards’ Sun teammate Marina Mabrey scored eight points in the quarter.
Following the second quarter, the Youngins found themselves still up over the Lunar Owls 51-43. Team captain Paige Bueckers led the squad with 17 points at the break. In quarter number three, the Lunar Owls closed the gap as Skylar Diggins scored 10 points, including two three-pointers as Mabrey drained also one from beyond the arc. Now, the Breeze held just a one-point lead with a 63-62. The winning score was 74 or more for either team.
In the end, Bueckers accounted for seven of the Breeze’s 12 points in the final quarter, including the game winner. With the 75-68 victory, the Youngins have a 4-2 record and a game back of the lead in the standings.
Lunar Owls – Breeze Unrivaled Basketball Recap
Despite the loss, Edwards got a double-double with 23 points and 16 rebounds for the Lunar Owls. Mabrey scored 18 points along with five boards and assists as Diggins got 17 points. Finally, Temi Fágbénlé notched four points while Rebecca Allen and Rachel Banham each had three points.
Shifting to the Breeze, it was another night at the office for Bueckers. She put up 28 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field. The Dallas Wings guard dished out seven assists with five rebounds. Next, Malonga scored 21 points with eight boards in the win. Brink was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line, getting 12 points with six boards.
Jackson got herself a double-double as the Los Angeles Sparks guard got 10 points with 13 boards. Kate Martin rounds out the scoring with four points.
Up next for the Breeze is a matchup tonight versus the Laces while the Lunar Owls will square off against the Hive tonight also.
